At OpenTalent, we have developed our internal Matching Algorithm to match candidates with jobs. In our pursuit to become the #1 talent-centric freelance platform globally, we strive to only provide candidates with jobs that truly match their preferences. A significant part of our matching effort depends on the “Matching Coefficient” of a job. For every job that gets added to our platform, we screen every candidate in an effort to decide if there’s a match. Only a handful of candidates will eventually receive a notification that a job is a match, which is determined by our matching coefficient. So how does our matching coefficient work, and how can it help you in your search for the ideal job? The article below will give you an idea of the OpenTalent matching coefficient and the thought process behind designing this part of the platform.

What is a Matching Coefficient?

In simple words, this is the statistics/ parameter used by our platform to match potential talents with a particular job posted by our clients. This means we compare your skills and preferences with the skills and requirements for a particular job, and based on the combined “relevance,” we will assign a % score to each job & talent match. This % score is what we call the matching coefficient.

How does the Matching Coefficient work?

The weight of the Matching Coefficient lies in comparing the skills (Technologies, Hard Skills, and Soft Skills) of a candidate against the mandatory skills of a job. Candidates with the highest matching coefficient will be ranked at the top. Up to 30 candidates per job are shown to companies. Accordingly, all matching candidates receive a notification by email, which includes the % score.

How to decide which matching coefficient to choose for getting an email notification?

In general, we consider all talents with a matching coefficient of 50% or more for the selection. Hence, ideally, if your matching coefficient is 50% or more and you fall within the shortlist of the top 30 candidates, an email will automatically get triggered informing you about the job. But, you can also decide to increase the % score threshold and only be notified of jobs with a matching coefficient that crosses your pick. So if you pick a 70% matching score, you will only receive jobs with a matching coefficient of 70% or higher. Hence, you need to be careful in selecting the desired matching score, as you might also miss out on (potential) jobs. Also, given **OpenTalent’s Finder’s Fee policies,** you might want to see more jobs (rather than fewer), as you may know people who you can introduce to benefit from our referral bonus. When your matching score is too high, you won’t receive that many email notifications of new jobs.

So think carefully before choosing your matching coefficient. Don’t worry, you can always change your preference from the Settings page.

Why restrict the Matching Coefficient to only 50% or higher?

As a part of our philosophy to remain as talent-centric as possible, we have decided to keep the matching coefficient at 50% or higher to ensure that we only notify candidates of relevant jobs. Unlike other platforms, our aim is not to overload candidates with potential jobs but to optimise your time and effort in finding a dream job by only showing you high-fit jobs. The matching coefficient is an important part of that commitment.
